Full Excavation and Crushed Gravel Driveway Build in Maine

A soft, rutted driveway doesn't just look bad - it gets worse every season. In Maine especially, freeze-thaw cycles will absolutely destroy a surface that wasn't built with proper drainage and a solid base underneath. That's exactly what we were working with here.

SP Pfau LLC and JSR Excavation and Hardscape LLC teamed up on this one. Full excavation first, getting down to stable ground and clearing out anything that would cause problems later. From there, we graded the surface so water moves away from the travel lane the way it's supposed to. Skip that step and you're back to a muddy mess before spring is even over.

Once the base was right, we topped it with fresh crushed gravel. Crushed stone is the go-to for Maine driveways for good reason - it compacts well, drains fast, and holds up under load. It's not just dumped and spread. The grading underneath is what makes the surface actually perform over time.

The finished driveway runs clean through a tree-lined corridor, wide enough for easy access and solid from edge to edge.
